SUMMARY:Localization as a Tool for Change: The importance of leading from the ground up for refugee and IDP education and advocacy 
DESCRIPTION:With global cuts to humanitarian and development aid at a time when the need for funding has never been greater\, how can we ensure the needs of refugees and internally displaced people are met\, especially when it comes to education? Girls who receive an education have more opportunities to reach their full potential. They live healthier lives\, wait longer to start a family\, usually have fewer children\, and are more likely to ensure their children attend school. Local organizations supporting refugees and internally displaced people are working on the frontline to provide essential educational services to fill this gap\, but more assistance and resources are needed to expand their formidable efforts. Localization calls us to shift power to local actors and that includes centering the knowledge and leadership of refugee communities themselves\, especially women and girls\, who are often the most affected yet least heard. \n\n\n\n\n\nOxfam Canada will be in conversation with our Geared for Success partners to highlight the importance of localized\, gender-responsive education initiatives for refugees and internally displaced people\, especially women and girls. DESCRIPTION:Rejoignez-nous le mercredi 6 août\, alors que la série de webinaires de l’AVA présente Suing for Silence: Sexual Violence and Defamation Law in Canada \, avec le Dr Mandi Gray de l’Université Trent. \nMercredi 6 août 2025 \n12h00 – 13h30 MST \nL’ouvrage de Mandi Gray\, Suing for Silence\, examine de manière critique comment les hommes violents peuvent utiliser les poursuites en diffamation comme arme contre quiconque tente de les tenir responsables. Au Canada\, les signalements officiels à la police ou à d’autres institutions comme les universités ne sont pas protégés contre les poursuites pour diffamation ou poursuites abusives. Les défenseurs et avocats spécialisés en violence sexuelle ont constaté une augmentation du recours aux poursuites civiles par les hommes accusés de violence sexuelle au cours de la dernière décennie. Dans cette conférence\, la Dre Gray examinera une perspective féministe critique pour expliquer comment l’inaction d’institutions comme la police et les tribunaux à répondre aux signalements de violence sexuelle peut exposer les survivants et leurs soutiens à des poursuites en représailles. Elle soutient que si ces poursuites se poursuivent\, nous risquons d’assister à la disparition du discours sur la violence sexuelle et constitue un obstacle supplémentaire à prendre en compte avant de déposer un signalement officiel. \nÀ propos du conférencier \nMandi Gray est professeure adjointe au département de sociologie de l’Université Trent. Elle travaille auprès des femmes et des filles aux prises avec le système judiciaire depuis 2008. Suing for Silence est son premier livre. Elle est également la principale productrice du documentaire Slut or Nut\, The Diary of a Rape Trial (2018). Ses travaux ont été publiés dans des publications telles que le Toronto Star\, CBC\, le Globe and Mail et Toronto Life.
