SUMMARY:Introduction to Gender Equality and Global Health
DESCRIPTION:Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right\, but a necessary foundation for a healthy\, peaceful\, and prosperous world. A person’s gender affects their ability to reduce their exposure to risks of poor health\, access healthcare\, adopt health-seeking behaviours\, and achieve good health and well-being. To be effective\, global health programs must adopt a gender integration approach that systematically works to reduce gender-related barriers to good health and well-being and advance gender equality and women’s and girls’ empowerment. \nThis introductory course takes a participatory approach to building global health practitioners’ skills to design\, implement\, monitor\, and evaluate gender transformative programmes. The course will follow a typical project cycle\, taking participants through key entry points for gender integration at each stage. Faculty from Canadian and global private and public sector institutions (e.g.\, academia\, NGOs\, government) will share their real-world experiences in gender integration in global health programmes\, and case studies will cover various sub-sectors\, such as immunization\, nutrition\, and malaria. In addition to gender analysis\, participants will learn how to apply an intersectional lens to gender-transformative approaches\, enhancing their understanding and promotion of social inclusion and the social determinants of health. Participants will be encouraged to share their own experiences with gender integration through group work and short assignments. \nCourse modules will include\, among others: \n\nIntroduction to Gender and Health: Provides an overview of key gender concepts—such as the differences between sex and gender\, gender norms\, roles\, and stereotypes—and explores how these factors impact health outcomes\, with essential terms and definitions in global health.\nGlobal Health Challenges and Gender Inequality: Examines major global health challenges and how gender inequality shapes health outcomes\, supported by case studies that illustrate the connections between gender and health.\nGender-Based Violence and Its Impact on Health: Covers various forms of gender-based violence (GBV) and their physical\, mental\, and reproductive health consequences\, along with strategies for GBV prevention and response within healthcare settings.\nPolicies and Programs for Gender Equality in Health: Reviews key global frameworks and agreements (e.g.\, SDGs\, CEDAW) alongside national policies that advance gender equality in health\, featuring case studies of effective gender-focused health interventions.\n\nRegister here!

SUMMARY:Expanding Neonatal and Pediatric Surgical Care in Conflict-Affected Settings: The MSF Experience
DESCRIPTION:On behalf of the UBC Branch for Global Surgical Care and the Institute for Global Health at BC Children’s and Women’s Hospital (IGH-CW)\, we invite you to attend a talk on “Expanding Neonatal and Pediatric Surgical Care in Conflict-Affected Settings: The MSF Experience” featuring Dr. Shahrzad Joharifard and Dr. Jean-Pierre Létoquart. \nWhen: Wednesday\, May 27\, 2026\, 7:00 – 8:00 AM \nWhere: BC Children’s Hospital TACC – Rooms T4-546 A&B + virtual \nIn many conflict-affected settings\, children comprise the majority of the population\, yet neonatal and pediatric surgical care remains largely absent from humanitarian surgical priorities. While emergency surgical programs have expanded globally\, children with congenital conditions and other complex surgical diseases often remain without access to specialized surgical\, anesthesia\, and perioperative care\, resulting in preventable disability\, chronic morbidity\, and death. \nIn this talk\, pediatric surgeon Shahrzad Joharifard and longtime MSF-France surgical advisor Jean-Pierre Létoquart discuss ongoing efforts within Médecins Sans Frontières to expand access to pediatric surgical care in some of the world’s most resource-constrained settings. Through clinical cases and field experience\, they explore the challenges of delivering complex neonatal and pediatric surgical care in environments with limited anesthesia\, nursing\, ICU\, and follow-up infrastructure\, and consider what ethical\, sustainable pediatric surgical care should look like in humanitarian medicine. \nAttend here!

DESCRIPTION:le mercredi 27 mai pour la série de webinaires AVA qui présente  le programme SPARX : Promouvoir des relations saines et prévenir la violence dans les relations amoureuses en sensibilisant les jeunes\, les aidants et les professionnels \, avec  Pénélope Allard-Cobeto et Émilie Marien de  SPARX pour des relations amoureuses et intimes positives . \nMercredi 27 mai 2026 \n14 h – 15 h 30 HAE \nLe programme SPARX est une initiative de prévention globale visant à promouvoir des relations intimes saines chez les jeunes et à prévenir la violence dans les relations amoureuses. Il comprend plusieurs volets adaptés à des publics cibles. Deux volets s’adressent spécifiquement aux jeunes : un comité d’ambassadeurs jeunesse\, créé par et pour les adolescents\, et des ateliers interactifs d’éducation à la sexualité axés sur la définition de relations saines et la prévention de la violence dans les relations amoureuses. Un autre volet soutient les personnes responsables en leur fournissant des outils et des ressources pratiques pour les aider à aborder avec assurance les relations saines et la violence dans les relations amoureuses avec les jeunes dont elles ont la charge. Le dernier volet est destiné aux professionnels travaillant auprès des jeunes\, en leur proposant des formations pour renforcer leur confiance en leurs capacités à aborder ces sujets\, à animer des ateliers et à réagir adéquatement aux révélations de violence. Ce webinaire présentera les quatre volets du programme SPARX et partagera les principaux résultats de son évaluation. \nÀ propos des intervenants \nPénélope Allard-Cobetto est titulaire d’une licence en criminologie et d’une maîtrise en sexologie. Depuis trois ans\, elle travaille avec la Chaire de recherche du Canada sur les traumatismes interpersonnels et la résilience à titre de coordonnatrice du projet SPARX. Dans ce cadre\, elle collabore avec des adolescents\, leurs aidants et des professionnels afin d’évaluer leurs besoins\, d’élaborer des outils en fonction de leurs suggestions\, de mettre en œuvre des initiatives ciblées et de recueillir des commentaires pour améliorer continuellement le programme\, dans le but de trouver des moyens efficaces de promouvoir des relations saines et de prévenir la violence dans les relations amoureuses. \nÉmilie Marien est titulaire d’un baccalauréat en sciences (enseignement secondaire) et d’un baccalauréat en sexologie. Dévouée à la promotion de l’éducation sexuelle auprès des jeunes\, elle travaille maintenant comme agente de soutien à la recherche pour la Chaire de recherche du Canada sur les traumatismes interpersonnels et la résilience. Elle offre des formations pour faciliter l’utilisation du programme SPARX\, soutient le volet jeunesse ambassadeur et joue un rôle clé dans la campagne sur les médias sociaux. Animée par la mission de rendre les outils de prévention de la violence dans les relations amoureuses et de promotion des relations saines aussi accessibles que possible\, elle s’engage à ce qu’ils répondent aux besoins réels des parents\, des intervenants jeunesse et des jeunes eux-mêmes. \nInscrivez-vous ici!
