SUMMARY:Poetic Inquiry into Narratives of Obstetric Violence in Canada
DESCRIPTION:Arts-based research has a unique way of presenting sensitive experiences. In this talk\, Dr. Kaveri Mayra will focus on 2741 people’s narratives about their embodied experience of labour and birth\, and the trauma and violence within those experiences\, using poetic enquiry. Through a series of poems and artistic illustrations\, this presentation seeks to engage with and understand participants’ narratives of obstetric violence and respectful person-centred care. \nAbout the Speaker: \nDr. Kaveri Mayra is a midwifery\, nursing and global health researcher from India with a PhD in Global Health from the University of Southampton\, UK\, where she explored the experiences and determinants of obstetric violence in India through an arts-based method called ‘birth mapping’. Dr. Mayra is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Birth Place Lab\, and the recipient of a Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research (MSFHR). She has extensive research experience on nursing and midwifery workforce policies\, regulation and practice; sexual\, reproductive and maternal health care and the underlying gender-based challenges.  \nDr. Mayra is has delivered guest lectures in universities and at conferences around the world on obstetric violence; orgasm equality\, nursing and midwifery governance\, the inequities\, sexism and discriminations in health policy-making; and has been recognized as one of the 100 outstanding global midwife and nurse leaders by Women in Global Health (WGH)\, WHO\, ICN\, ICM\, Nursing Now and UNFPA to mark the Year of the Nurse and the Midwife 2020. She was recently featured as Frontiers women in STEM.  \nDr. Mayra currently serves on the board on Human Rights in Childbirth (HRIC)\, White Ribbon Alliance UK and Academy for Nursing Studies and Women’s Empowerment Research Studies. She is an Academic Editor with PLOS Global Public Health and was a consultant for the WHO Academy on Essential Respectful Care Course. SUMMARY:Rethinking Good Intentions - Hosted by the Centre for Global Health
DESCRIPTION:This compelling play transports audiences to the rural villages of Sierra Leone\, West Africa in the late 1970s and 1980s where Nancy worked as a community health nurse for five years. The play is filled with stories about Nancy’s initially blundered and then inspired encounters with village chiefs\, traditional birth attendants\, and subsistence farmers. Village experiences rattled Nancy’s cultural preconceptions\, provoked her notions of social privilege\, and forever deepened her global connections. \nNancy Edwards\, BScN\, MSc\, PhD\, FCAHS \nNancy Edwards is a Distinguished Professor and Professor Emeritus\, School of Nursing\, University of Ottawa. Dr. Edwards obtained her undergraduate nursing degree from the University of Windsor and completed graduate studies in epidemiology at McMaster University and McGill University. She is a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. Nancy has received numerous awards including three honorary doctoral degrees. Dr. Edwards’ clinical and research interests are in the fields of public and population health. She has conducted health services\, policy\, and clinical research both nationally and internationally. Her work in global health spanned four continents where she led both development-oriented and research-focused projects with a focus on maternal and child health and capacity-building. \nRonald Carshon – Marsh \nRonald is a 3rd year Doctor of Public Health candidate at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health. He obtained his first degree in Medicine in 2008 at the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS)\, Sierra Leone\, and his Master of International Public Health degree at the University of Queensland\, Australia. He holds postgraduate certificates in Health Systems Planning and Mortality Surveillance. Ronald worked as a medical officer in various hospitals in Sierra Leone\, serving as the Medical Superintendent of the Koidu government hospital\, Kono from 2014 to 2016. He led the case management pillar for the Ebola Viral Disease epidemic response during this time. As a result of his dedicated professional service to humanity\, the Faculty of Medicine\, University of Queensland\, Australia\, awarded him the ‘Young Alumni Excellence Award 2016’. He also worked as the District Medical Officer (DMO) in two districts and served as the overall technical and surveillance lead for the COVID-19 response in Bo district from 2020 to 2021. He later served as the manager of the National Malaria Control Programme. Ronald has contributed significantly to mortality surveillance research and has published many articles on malaria\, mortality surveillance and antimicrobial resistance. \nDiana Kaliza \nAs a second-year MPH student specializing in Social and Behavioral Health Sciences at the University of Toronto\, Diana is strongly passionate about community-centred and global health interventions. Her work predominantly focuses on women’s health and infectious diseases in Sub-Saharan Africa. She has played a key role in collaborating with global partners to develop and support programs aimed at enhancing the professional development of faculty and women in leadership roles in Kenya and South Africa. Additionally\, Diana has contributed to the design of educational programs tailored to address the specific needs of African communities in primary health care. Furthermore\, she brings a background in program management\, specifically in training primary care providers in maternal and newborn health and ensuring project success and compliance. \nAttend here!

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging and impactful case competition focusing on maternal and child health in the Global South. This competition provides a unique opportunity for participants to apply their skills and knowledge to real-world challenges faced by mothers and children in under-resourced settings. \nParticipants will be presented with a case study based on real-life scenarios encountered by Partners In Health Canada in their maternal and child health initiatives. Teams will analyze the case\, develop innovative solutions\, and present their recommendations to a panel of experts. \nWho Should Participate: \n– Students from the fields of public health\, medicine\, nursing\, social sciences\, and related disciplines\n– Students passionate about global health and social justice\n– Teams of up to 4 participants \nHow it Works: \nForm a team of four or join as an individual and be placed in a team. On the day of the competition\, your team will receive a real-life maternal and child health issue that Partners In Health Canada has encountered in the Global South. You will have roughly 3 hours to analyze the issue and develop a comprehensive program to address it. \nAll necessary information about the country and the specific problem will be provided to you. After developing your solution\, your team will present your proposal to one of our judges. The judges will select their top choices\, and the three best teams will present their proposals to all participants. Emploi et Développement social Canada (EDSC) a le plaisir de vous inviter à participer à une séance d’information virtuelle afin d’apprendre davantage sur les activités du secrétariat de l’unité des objectifs de développement durable (ODD) et de la façon dont vous pouvez participer au rapport annuel 2025 du Programme 2030. \nNous vous invitons à partager cette invitation parmi votre réseau afin de faire connaitre ces séances d’information.
