DESCRIPTION:To mark International Development Week in February\, the art exhibition « Through my eyes: art for development » will be hosted by the University of Ottawa’s WUSC Local Committee\, a dynamic campus-based group who support our organization’s awareness-raising efforts. This art exhibition brings together the work of 24 artists from Ghana\, Malawi\, and Canada. The diversity of their family backgrounds\, professional experiences\, the contexts in which they lived\, as well as the challenges they faced daily\, has brought extra depth to their work.\n\nÀ travers mes yeux : l’art pour le développement rassemble les œuvres de 24 artistes du Ghana\, du Malawi et du Canada. La diversité de leurs origines familiales\, de leurs expériences professionnelles\, de leurs contextes de vie\, ainsi que des défis quotidiens qui leur ont été posés\, a apporté une profondeur supplémentaire à leur travail. \nLa force de cette exposition d’art réside dans le fait que cette puissante diversité est unie par des valeurs communes à tou-te-s ces artistes et une vision partagée du développement durable. \nDans le cadre de ses efforts de développement mondial\, l’EUMC a créé cette exposition d’œuvres d’art axée sur le Programme 2030 et ses ODD. L’exposition ne se contente pas de transmettre un message\, elle vise à sensibiliser de manière positive\, en mettant en lumière les défis mondiaux auxquels les gens sont confrontés et le rôle essentiel que les actions individuelles peuvent jouer. \n\nThe art exhibition is free to enter and open to interested visitors from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on February 3 and 4 at Jock Turcot University Centre at the University of Ottawa. The Opening Night Launch Event will be on February 3rd (5-8 p.m. EST) with performances from the student community. The registration link to attend the launch event will be shared soon on the local committee’s social media accounts. DESCRIPTION:Dans le cadre de la Semaine du développement international 2025\, Coopération Canada et le Centre de recherches pour le développement international (CRDI) sont fiers de présenter une réception et une projection de The Legend of the Vagabond Queen of Lagos​\, un film puissant et stimulant qui offre une critique captivante du développement urbain et des expulsions forcées dans la plus grande ville d’Afrique\, Lagos. \nRéalisé par le collectif Agbajowo\, ce premier film saisissant combine des éléments de thriller\, de documentaire et de réalisme magique pour raconter l’histoire de Jawu\, un esprit guerrier piégé dans les dures réalités des bidonvilles flottants de Lagos. Incarnée par la talentueuse Temi Ami-Williams (connue pour Eyimofe)\, Jawu s’embarque dans un voyage périlleux après avoir découvert les sombres secrets de politiciens corrompus et s’être confrontée à la réalité brutale des expulsions qui menacent sa maison et sa communauté. Bien qu’il s’agisse d’une œuvre de fiction\, de nombreuses scènes décrites sont basées sur des événements réels qui se sont produits au cours de l’expulsion forcée et violente de plus de 30 000 personnes de la communauté de pêcheurs Egun d’Otodo Gbame​ entre novembre 2016 et avril 2017. \nRejoignez-nous le 3 février 2025 à 16h30 EST pour une réception d’introduction (entrée gratuite servant des collations légères de cuisine nigériane avec des présentations spéciales de Coopération Canada\, CRDI et Justice Empowerment Initiatives​) suivie d’une projection éclairante (frais minimum de 5 $ PCQVP) et restez pour une discussion sur l’intersection du développement urbain et des droits humains ainsi que pour une séance de questions-réponses avec des figures clés de la production du film. \n\n\n\n\n\nSynopsis du film : \nJawu\, mère de famille et vendeuse sur un petit marché\, vit humblement avec son fils dans la communauté d’Agbojedo\, un bidonville flottant situé sur le lagon qui a donné son nom à la ville de Lagos. Alors que des rumeurs circulent sur le projet du gouvernement de démolir leurs maisons en vue d’un nouveau développement\, Jawu tombe sur un politicien corrompu en train d’enterrer une cachette d’argent volé. Voyant là une chance de changer sa vie\, elle prend l’argent. Cependant\, elle découvre rapidement que ses actes l’ont mise sur une voie qui lui demandera plus qu’elle ne l’aurait jamais imaginé : elle devra se battre pour survivre et pour l’avenir de sa communauté. \nÀ travers ce récit époustouflant\, The Legend of the Vagabond Queen of Lagos explore les thèmes de la pauvreté\, du pouvoir et de la destruction des communautés\, tout en mêlant les préoccupations de la vie réelle à la magie des contes nigérians. DESCRIPTION:En cette Semaine du développement international (SDI)\, joignez-vous à la Fondation Aga Khan Canada\, en partenariat avec le Conseil consultatif des jeunes de l’Institut Jane Goodall du Canada\, dans le cadre d’un après-midi de discussions animées par des jeunes. Vous aurez l’occasion d’échanger\, de réseauter et d’assister à des présentations sur les défis et les possibilités croisés dans le domaine du développement mondial. \nLa SDI a lieu chaque année au cours de la première semaine de février afin de souligner le rôle du Canada dans la lutte contre la pauvreté et d’encourager les Canadiens à participer au développement mondial. \nCet événement de réseautage gratuit est conçu pour mettre en contact des personnes de divers secteurs\, de diverses générations et de divers cheminements de carrière qui souhaitent soutenir des initiatives durables et inclusives axées sur le renforcement de l’autonomie des communautés au Canada et dans le monde. \nL’événement public comprendra : \n\nDes réflexions des jeunes sur les questions croisées de la résilience climatique\, de la santé et des droits sexuels et reproductifs\, de la conservation et de l’autonomisation économique;\nDes points de vue des chefs de file du secteur;\nUn échange d’idées (une occasion de rencontrer de nouvelles personnes dans le cadre de conversations stimulantes);\nDes occasions de réseautage informel.\n\nVous aurez la chance de rencontrer des représentants des organisations suivantes : Fondation Aga Khan Canada\, Institut Jane Goodall du Canada\, Oxfam Canada\, CARE Canada\, Youth Challenge International\, EUMC\, et plus encore! \nDes rafraîchissements légers seront servis. \nRemarques : \n\nBien que la Fondation Aga Khan Canada et l’Institut Jane Goodall du Canada (JGIC) organisent cet événement ensemble\, sachez que le JGIC offrira son propre programme au long de la journée. DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Global Health Spotlight Series – In Conversation! \nHosted by the Institute for Global Health at BC Children’s Hospital and BC Women’s Hospital + Health Centre. \nJoin us as we explore Angela’s journey to becoming a global health leader—highlighting her defining moments\, lessons learned\, and current projects. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nExplore how researchers’ unique journeys have shaped their current projects and the strategies they use to create equitable partnerships\nUnderstand the “what” but also the “why” behind their chosen methods and models\, including key decision-points\, challenges and adjustments made along the way\nLearn about opportunities to leverage resources and foster new collaborations and partnerships\n\nWhen: Tuesday\, February 18\, 2025 |12:00 – 1:00 pm PST \nWhere: In-Person at Room 2108 BCCHRI (across from the Chan Centre for Family Health Education auditorium)\, BC Children’s Hospital \nTicket Cost: Free \nLunch will be provided for registered participants. \nOur first speaker is Dr. Angela Kaida\, a global health epidemiologist and community-based researcher at Simon Fraser University where she is an SFU Distinguished Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences and the former Canada Research Chair in Global Perspectives on HIV and Sexual and Reproductive Health. She leads a global research program focused on factors and environments that increase vulnerability or protect sexual and reproductive health in the context of HIV. Dr. Kaida works closely with community leaders and decision makers to integrate research evidence into health policy and programming attending to social and gender equity. In 2022\, she was elected as a Member of the Royal Society College of New Scholars\, Artists and Scientists. \nDr. Gina Ogilvie\, is the Co-Executive Medical Director of the Institute for Global Health BCCWH. She is a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Global Control of HPV related diseases and prevention\, and Professor at the University of British Columbia in the School of Population and Public Health. She is also Senior Public Health Scientist at BC Centre for Disease Control and Senior Research Advisor at the BC Women’s Hospital and Health Centre. \nReserve your spot now!
