Nutrition International Makes Two Commitments as Global Goalkeepers Partner

New York City, USA Nutrition International is proud to have made two commitments as a Global Goalkeepers partner under the Gates Foundation Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Accelerator to help advance the global goals. Nutrition International has committed to develop the first comprehensive tool for calculating the cost-effectiveness on transitioning from iron folic acid supplementation (IFAS) to multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMS). Emerging global evidence supports the benefits of MMS for improving birth outcomes, reducing maternal anaemia and improving overall health and nutritional status of women. This tool will support governments in making informed policy decisions on the introduction of MMS. Nutrition International and UNICEF have jointly committed to focus on catalyzing support for country-driven programs for the uptake on the transition from IFAS to MMS using advocacy, tools and emerging evidence.

Prioritizing maternal nutrition is an important part of delivering global commitments on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and on the World Health Assembly  Global 2025 Nutrition Targets. Good nutrition for women is a vital component to their overall survival, health, and well-being, and is particularly important during pregnancy for fetal development and positive birth outcomes. Malnutrition amongst women is a public health problem, particularly in low and middle income countries; anaemia continues to be one of the largest public health problems amongst women, affecting nearly half a billion women of a reproductive age worldwide.

The Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Accelerator, unveiled at the 2019 Goalkeepers event, brings together nearly $50 million in financial and in-kind contributions, to reach over 17.5 million pregnant women and their newborns in multiple countries, including Myanmar, Indonesia and Bangladesh, over the next 3 years. With significant commitments from over 10 partners across the private sector, civil society and more, this Accelerator will make much-needed progress against SDGs 2 and 3, saving lives and improving the health of millions of moms and newborns.

Nutrition International is excited to be a partner under the Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies Accelerator to mobilize action on MMS implementation and maternal nutrition.
