LOCATION: This is home-based position

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting to the CEO and serving as a member of the senior management team, this position’s primary responsibility is ensuring organizational effectiveness by providing leadership for the organization’s financial, human resource, and reporting functions. Working with the management team, the position also contributes to the development and implementation of organizational strategies, policies and practices.

Specifically, the Director, Operations will be responsible for day-to-day operations and managing human and financial resources, in accordance with the organization’s financial and human resource policies. This includes working with a small financial administration team to oversee all financial processes, funder reporting, maintaining and managing organizational and program budgets and leading on a long-term fund diversification strategy. Human resource management includes leading on recruitment, orientation and retention of staff; overall staff and workplace culture, designing human resource processes and advising supervisors and the CEO on human resource matters, managing policies, procedures and systems within the organization.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Financial – Accountable to ensure effective use of financial resources including: ensuring accurate accounting of organizational resources, creating financial statements for CEO, board and funding bodies. Utilize financial data to improve efficiency. Prepare and control operational budgets. Plan effective strategies for the financial wellbeing of the organization.
  • Organizational Effectiveness – Improve processes and policies in support of organizational goals. Formulate and implement organizational policies and procedures to maximize output. Monitor adherence to rules, regulations and procedures. Manage staff and organizational development to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Member engagement – oversee membership policies and procedures to ensure viability of CanWaCH as a membership based organization.
  • Human Resources – Working with the CEO, plan the use of human resources. Lead recruitment and placement of required staff; establishment of organizational structure for all staff and contractors. Create and maintain performance management system for all staff ensuring staff are optimizing performance and effectively supported in their organizational roles and responsibilities.
  • Communication – Monitor, manage and improve the efficiency of support services such as IT, HR, Accounts and Finance. Facilitate coordination and communication between support functions.
  • Risk Management  Serve as the primary liaison to legal counsel in addressing legal issues. Oversee organizational insurance policies. Ensure health and safety standards are met.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Commitment to CanWaCH’s values, vision and mission
  • Self-reflection and ability to navigate differences in opinion and difficult conversations
  • Demonstrated sense of humour
  • Superior communication skills (particularly written skills) in English
  • Experience in human resources, conflict resolution and/or negotiation
  • Demonstrated experience with managing non-profit finances and ensuring compliance with contribution agreement requirements
  • Exceptional project management skills, including a strong aptitude for managing multiple priorities and files simultaneously
  • Strong critical thinking abilities, demonstrating exceptional judgment, discretion and decision-making skills 
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal information, exhibiting resourcefulness
  • Experience supervising and managing staff and consultants in order to achieve project deliverables
  • 10+ years experience and degree from a recognized university in a relevant discipline or commensurate credentials and experience (ex. credentials in financial management or human resources). 
  • Fluency in French (desired)
