Role Overview  

Reporting to the Director of Communications and Fund Development, the Fund Development Officer is responsible for coordinating and implementing an integrated Direct Response program for Action Canada. The successful candidate will coordinate and implement Action Canada’s existing direct response revenue streams, including direct mail, lead generation, monthly giving, and digital fundraising, as well as any new direct response activities that may be introduced as part of Action Canada’s Fund Development strategy. In carrying out these responsibilities, the Fund Development Officer will work with the Communications and Fund Development teams as well as other relevant staff and external parties to successfully deliver on program results.

Position Overview

The Officer’s responsibilities will include:

Direct Response Program Coordination & Implementation

  • Develops, writes, and designs all direct response appeals; the annual program currently includes (but is not limited to) 4 direct mail appeals with integrated digital campaigns; 1 digital lead generation campaign; and a Giving Tuesday and Year-End digital campaign. The Communications team supports with digital elements of each campaign.  
  • Leads on the execution and coordination of the integrated annual direct response plan in order to maximize net income and achieve overall program targets and objectives, including supporting an Anti-Racist and Anti Oppressive (ARAO) approach to fundraising drives;
  • Coordinates with external agencies in the delivery of direct response programs by developing revenue and communications objectives, disseminating strategic directions, reviewing copy and creative and seeking approval, and facilitating requests for required donor data;
  • Develops schedules and critical paths for each component of the direct response program, including acquisition and conversion strategies;
  • Coordinates with appropriate internal Action Canada staff to ensure content and messaging in donor solicitations/communications are accurate and reflect our values;
  • Ensures fundraising efforts comply with national and provincial regulations related to Action Canada’s direct response program;
  • Supports using an ARAO lens in all direct response program initiatives, including in the wording and images used and is open to rethinking traditional approaches while working with best practice on fundraising and ARAO;
  • Manages and maintains inventories of direct response materials;
  • With the support of the Fundraising team, applies appropriate innovations within direct response fundraising by adjusting strategies and tactics.

Program Analysis & Reporting

  • Works with the Fund Development and Operations teams to ensure that proper tracking systems are in place to monitor campaigns and appeals;
  • Monitors and analyzes appeal performance and campaign effectiveness against set benchmarks and performance metrics;
  • Produces timely reports showing performance against targets;
  • Produces regular reports showing analytics related to our donor base.

Financial and Budget Management

  • Works with Director of Communications and Fund Development to develop a detailed annual revenue and expense budget for the direct response program;
  • Monitors monthly revenue and expense budgets;
  • Reviews and approves program expenditures in alignment with approved budget;
  • Arranges the payment of invoices.

Internal Collaboration

  • Collaborates with Program and Communications staff to identify compelling stories of impact that are effective and appropriate to use in direct response appeals;
  • Works closely with Communications team to implement and improve strategies related to integrated online and offline direct response initiatives and effectively leverage social media, email, and web presence for fundraising purposes;
  • Works closely with members of other departments to ensure alignment and integration of direct response program with overall organizational goals, campaigns, and priorities;
  • Other duties as required.


  • University degree or post-secondary diploma in Marketing/Fundraising OR relevant combination of education and/or experience working in the not-for-profit sector; CFRE Designation is an asset;
  • A minimum of three (3) years of fundraising experience for charitable organizations with a minimum of two (2) years of experience coordinating a direct mail program or applicable project management experience;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices associated with direct response fundraising;
  • Proven record of achievement managing and implementing an integrated direct response program;
  • Excellent written and spoken skills in English, including demonstrated experience with storytelling and appeal-writing as well as the ability to communicate complex issues in a way that is concise and easily understood;
  • Ability to approach fundraising from an anti-racist and anti-oppressive (ARAO) framework and a commitment to learning about the interconnections between ARAO and fundraising best practice;
  • Knowledge, understanding, and commitment to global justice, anti-racism and anti-oppression, sexual and reproductive health and rights, feminist policy and practice, and the mission and values of Action Canada;
  • Superior public relations skills with experience working directly with donors;
  • Demonstrated experience working with donor database systems (CiviCRM experience is considered an asset);
  • Proven capacity to work in a self-directed manner as well as demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively with other staff and volunteers;
  • Excellent analytical skills;
  • High level of attention to detail and accuracy;
  • Demonstrated budget management skills;
  • An ability to learn new software and strong computer skills, including with online conferencing tools (Zoom), project management (Asana), cloud-based document management (Dropbox), and Microsoft Office;
  • Eligible to work in Canada.

Additional Assets Considered

  • Experience in fundraising for policy and/or human rights organizations;
  • Experience with major and legacy donor programs;
  • French language proficiency;
  • Design experience and competence using Adobe Creative Suite and/or Canva;
  • Experience posting to and updating websites;
  • Experience in community-centric fundraising.

Compensation and Benefits

This is a full-time (37.5 hours per week), salaried position. This is a unionized position in CUPE Local 2722-05. Salary for this position is $60,900 per annum. Action Canada also provides a generous benefits program, including extended health and dental benefits, leave allowances, and RRSP contributions.


Action Canada’s offices are based in Ottawa, Ontario; however, some staff members work in other locations under a remote work agreement. Action Canada will prioritize hiring candidates based in Ottawa (or willing to relocate) but will consider applications from candidates within Ontario. All candidates must be legally able to work in Canada.

Hiring Process and Timeline

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted between the closing date and the end of May. Interviews will take place the week of May 29, with a start date in June, depending on the successful candidate’s availability.

The hiring process will include a one-hour panel interview to take place over video conference and a short skills-based test.
