Description

Nearly 80 per cent Indian households without piped water connection In rural India, close to 90 per cent households do not have piped Connections. Overall, 48.6 per cent rural households and 28 per cent urban households are without access to an improved source of drinking water throughout the year. Further, 11.3 per cent households do not get sufficient drinking water from their primary sources throughout the year.

The survey, conducted between July and December 2018, looked at the sources that provided drinking water to households for the past one year. It covered 27.1 crore households, with, on an average, had four family members. Water is vital for life and one of the basic needs for the survival of human and other living beings, next to air. An average person needs 5 liters of clean water every day to survive—this

is not surprising given that 70% of our bodies are made up of water! As water is such a necessity, insufficient supply of safe drinking water or contaminated (impure) drinking water, poses a challenge and a threat. All forms of life are dependent on water in one way or another for survival. It is important to use a source of safe water supply for health benefits in terms of reduced morbidity and mortality due to diseases. Water from surface sources like rivers, lakes, ponds etc. is prone to contamination by animals and man. This contaminated water may be the cause of many water borne diseases. It has been revealed through many studies that improvement in water availability and quality have resulted in a substantial impact on the reduction of diarrhea morbidity.
