Haut de la pageThe SickKids-Ghana Paediatric Nursing Education Partnership (PNEP) aimed to reduce death and illness among newborns and children in underserved districts in Ghana. By expanding practice-focused paediatric nursing education at the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives,this project built the professional skills of paediatric nurses and health professoinals to provide quality, cost-effective, evidence-based care to newborns and children. Project activities included: (1) establishing three new training institutions for paediatric nursing specialist programs and continuing professional development courses; (2) developing standardized curricula for the paediatric nursing specialist program and the continuing professional development course at the national Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives; (3) delivering paediatric nursing specialist training programs to 500 nurses; (4) delivering continuing professional development courses on subjects such as sickle cell disease, neonatal care and nutrition to 1,000 nurses, midwives, allied health professionals; and, (5) facilitating the adoption of essential policies including equitable national recruitment, retention and deployment strategies for scale-up with a focus on underserved regions.

Haut de la pageBetween 2015 and 2020, SickKids partnered with the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives, the Ministry of Health, Ghana and Ghana Health Services to train 501 (372 F/ 129 M) paediatric nurses through a one-year postgraduate programme in Paediatric Nursing at the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives. The 501 nurses were recruited from and deployed to over 200 unique facilities in Ghana including all five teaching hospitals, ten regional hospitals and over 75% of all district hospitals in the country. Four nurses were sponsored by the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, Sierra Leone, to complete in the programme in Ghana. As of February 2023, 96% of trained nurses remained working in the health system in Ghana. Additionally, over 1,200 health workers from all 16 of Ghana’s regions were trained through Continuing Professional Development sessions focused on newborn care, sickle cell disease and nutrition. The Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives continues to operate the program in Ghana and is advancing specialty nursing education across the country and in the West African region.
