Grand Challenges Canada (GCC) is seeking an Associate Communications Officer to play a critical role in supporting the implementation and coordination of the communications strategy. This role is key in helping the organization promote and support our initiatives, and assist us in sharing our story and sharing the great work of our innovators through creative communications and storytelling.

GCC is dedicated to supporting Bold Ideas with Big Impact®. We are funded by the Government of Canada and we fund innovators in low- and middle-income countries and Canada. The bold ideas we support integrate science and technology, social and business innovation – we call this Integrated Innovation®. We have a determined focus on results, and on saving and improving lives. GCC works closely with Global Affairs Canada, and a global network of partners to bring successful innovations to scale, catalyzing sustainability and impact. With $200 million in funding from the Government of Canada, GCC is currently focused largely on innovations that address persistent reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) challenges.

Associate Communications Officer

  • Create and distribute communications products including news releases, blogs and industry newsletters
  • Execute proactive and responsive media relations outreach
  • Manage and execute social media initiatives
  • Manage and update the corporate website and other affiliated microsites
  • Manage and execute digital marketing initiatives (ex. Google Ads)
  • Layout, draft and edit annual letters, annual reports, and other funder report documents
  • Support brand management activities
  • Compile and analyze communications and B2B outreach metrics
  • Execute on and contribute to the development of Grand Challenges Canada’s communications strategy in support of key programs, events and initiatives
  • Use storytelling to help creatively communicate Grand Challenges Canada’s work and the work of our innovators to Canadians
  • Offer support and communication advice to management, staff and innovators
  • Perform other job-related duties as required

Qualifications

  • Bachelors’ degree in Communications, Arts, Science, Business or recognized equivalent; media-related degree or diploma or, relevant practical experience, which will be valued the same as a degree or diploma
  • Verbal and written fluency in French preferred; experience in producing content in French a plus
  • Three (3) years’ experience working in communications/public relations and/or marketing a plus
  • Media contacts in international development fields an asset
  • Experience with social media management (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube)
  • Experience with creative production software (e.g. Adobe Creative Cloud apps, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere)
  • Demonstrated proficiency with web publishing (e.g. WordPress) and familiarity with HTML; experience with AODA requirements and SEO best practices a plus
  • Demonstrated proficiency with word-processing, database and spreadsheet software (e.g. Microsoft Office suite)
  • Superior writing, editing and proofreading skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, with demonstrated ability to work well independently and within teams
  • The ability to work under the pressure of competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Interest and knowledge of global health, early childhood development, international development, sexual and reproductive health and rights, Indigenous innovation, humanitarian assistance and/or social finance/impact investing fields preferred
  • Enthusiastic commitment to Grand Challenges Canada’s mission and work as a feminist and diverse impact investor
