Board Members – WaterAid Canada

WaterAid Canada is an international charitable organization whose mission is to transform the lives of the poorest and most marginalized people by improving access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene. Only by tackling these three essentials in ways that last can people change their lives for good.

WaterAid’s vision is a world where everyone, everywhere has safe water, sanitation, and hygiene. WaterAid operates in 35 countries in the world.

Access to water, sanitation and hygiene is a basic human right, yet:

  • One person in ten in the world does not have clean water close to home;
  • One person in four does not have access to a decent toilet at home;
  • 2.3 billion people in the world lack basic handwashing facilities that have soap and water; and,
  • 31% of schools globally do not have access to a basic water service.
     

We are looking for committed individuals from the charitable sector, academia, the private sector, the water industry, and/or government who have experience volunteering with a Board and who are passionate about international development and human rights. All candidates should be based in Canada.

We are seeking the following expertise (with particular need for*):

  • Philanthropy/fundraising*;
  • Communications, media, and marketing*;
  • Finance and audit (chartered accounting)*;
  • Water security and related issues;
  • Climate change, adaptation, and resilience;
  • International development.
  • Government relations
  • Diversity, equality and inclusion

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing strategic directions and fiduciary overnight; ensuring organizational risk management; ensuring organizational alignment with mission and vision.
  • Board meeting attendance five times a year, in person and virtually. For Board members located outside of Ottawa, Eastern Time Zone applied. 
  • Participating in at least one Committee of the Board (Governance, Finance & Audit, and Revenue).
  • Attending annual general meeting and any special meetings.
  • Term: three years, renewable once.
