As an Indigenous-led and -governed platform, the Indigenous Innovation Initiative empowers First Nation, Inuit and Métis innovators to develop and test innovative ideas that benefit their communities and advance reconciliation, while also benefiting non-Indigenous people and the Land. We do this through a gender-lens investment approach that provides flexible grant funding and culturally rooted wrap-around supports that meet innovators where they are at. We are hosted at Grand Challenges Canada, where we receive operational support from an expert team of individuals across various portfolios.
We are seeking a Communications Associate to play a crucial role in helping the Knowledges Mobilization Team with all communications activities, including being the brand ambassador for the Indigenous Innovation Initiative; amplifying the stories, journeys and impacts of the innovators we fund; and supporting donor relations activities. Reporting to the Director of the Indigenous Innovation Initiative and working closely with others across the team, the Communications Associate will have the following core responsibilities:
• Develop and evolve a Communications, Marketing and Promotion Strategy that is culturally rooted and strategically supports us at all levels
• Support the development and maintenance of brand guidelines and document templates that promote our brand and story
• Create social media posts, newsletters, news releases, blogs, presentations, website content etc.
• Maintain the Indigenous Innovation Initiative website
• Maintain a database of TV, radio, print and newspaper media contacts
• Support the leadership team with donor and partner communications activities as outlined in a Fundraising Strategy, including supporting maintenance of a database of contacts and leads
• Support the development of plain language materials
• Support the creation of knowledge products, including reports, presentations, case studies etc.
• Develop and maintain communications processes and systems, and identify and action opportunities to make them more efficient and effective
• Support ongoing implementation of the Indigenous Knowledges and Data Governance Protocol
• Track and analyze metrics to support learning, storytelling and evolution as it relates to the above
• Support risk and issue management as it relates to the above
Key attributes and experience we are looking for in a Communications Associate:
• Strong understanding of Indigenous contexts in Canada
• Education or experience with a focus on communications, digital marketing and promotion, media and/or storytelling
• Highly developed writing, editing, proofreading and storytelling skills within an Indigenous context
• Experience with social media management (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Linktree, YouTube, Tik Tok)
• Experience with graphic design in Canva (or similar software), photography, AODA requirements and search engine optimization best practices is an asset
• Attention to detail and commitment to quality and excellence
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to be proactive
• Highly developed interpersonal skills with an ability to work well independently and as a team
• Fluency in French and/or Indigenous languages is an asset
• Creative and innovative spirit, and openness to take meaningful risks
