Operation Smile

We are a volunteer-delivered global medical charity that provides free surgery to repair cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial differences for children and young adults.  Active in over 60 low- and middle -income countries around the world, we exist to make sure everyone receives the safe corrective surgery and complete care they need (through comprehensive care programs like speech therapy, dental/orthodontics, nutrition, social work and psychology) wherever they live in the world.

The Role

Working alongside a growing team, the Community Volunteer Engagement Specialist’s primary role is to build a nation-wide team of committed volunteer community ambassadors that will raise awareness and funds by engaging their local businesses, communities, families, and friends.

The successful candidate will lead our annual peer-to-peer fundraising campaign Longest Day of SMILES® and play an integral role in helping to achieve our departmental and organizational goals. This is a full time, permanent position. Core business hours are 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday and will require some flexibility outside of those hours to accommodate volunteer needs. This position requires you to have a valid driver’s license and the ability to travel within Canada and internationally, if needed.

Key Functions and Accountabilities

The Community Volunteer Engagement Specialist will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

  • Working closely with the National Director, Volunteer, Staff & Community Engagement to develop and execute the tactical plans of grass roots community, corporate and third-party events to meet set annual fundraising goals.
  • Building new/maintaining current relationships with community partners, organizations, businesses, associations, employee groups, and other stakeholders with the goal of having a presence in communities from coast-to-coast-to-coast.
  • Providing the highest level of service and equipping volunteer community ambassadors with the tools and resources to reach their goals.
  • Driving the planning and execution of our signature peer-to-peer campaign, Longest Day of SMILES®. Includes recruiting and engaging community ambassadors and assisting with seeking new and stewarding existing sponsors as it relates to the campaign.
  • Helping guide and support community ambassadors with third-party events/fundraisers.
  • Managing elements of and promoting the speaker program to various community groups and service clubs across Canada.
  • Assisting with the coordination and execution of service projects and corporate employee engagement initiatives.
  • Establishing departmental measures and assisting with budget development and reconciliation.
  • Managing social media posts for the community ambassador pages.
  • Maintaining the donor/prospect databases, Raiser’s Edge and Luminate Online, to ensure proper details and records are always kept up to date.
  • Providing accurate reporting on third party and community engagement calendars and ensuring all relevant information is captured and tracked.
  • Assisting with the development of communications pieces for community ambassadors (i.e. newsletters, e-blasts, etc.).
  • Packaging and shipping welcome kits, information packages and other material to community leaders.
  • Assisting with the development of new resources and materials, such as recruitment tools, that communicate to a wide array of audiences.
  • Handling emails and inquiries from the community engagement inbox in a timely manner.
  • Providing administrative support to the team and other departments as needed.
  • Other duties as required.

Desired Qualifications and Required Skills

  • Interest and appreciation of Operation Smile Canada’s core mission and ability to communicate that mission across different platforms and audiences.
  • Post-secondary diploma or degree with a minimum of 2-3 years of experience in, or a combination of, community engagement, fundraising, customer service, sales, marketing, or volunteer management.
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with Raiser’s Edge and/or Luminate Online considered an asset.

  • Positive and professional with a can-do attitude.
  • Exemplary written and oral communication skills.
    • Fluency in written and oral French is a definite asset.
  • Excellent public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Project management skills: ability to multitask, problem-solve, prioritize, delegate, and refine systems and processes.
  • Ability to use independent judgment that aligns with overall goals and objectives of the department.
  • Ability to smile during high-pressure situations.
  • Majority of this position is within office hours but requires some evening and weekend duties.
  • Valid G license and access to a car is an asset.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally, if required.

SALARY & BENEFITS

  • The salary range for this position is $50,000-$65,000, including paid vacation time.
