Global Health Project Coordinator, Indigenous, Local & Global Health, Cumming School of Medicine

The Office of Indigenous, Local & Global Health in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Global Health Project Coordinator. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Global Health Project Coordinator supports the Assistant Dean and Directors of the Global Health Program.  Reporting to the Director, Global Health Projects, the Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the program activities and administrative oversight for the Healthy Adolescent and Young People in Southwest Uganda (HAY!) project, 2020-2024, seeks to contribute to reductions in adolescent pregnancy in Uganda through a model for maximizing engagement for readiness and impact.  The Coordinator will also support other global health projects as new program funding is awarded.

This high-profile role serves as a liaison between CSM and external global partners and will be experienced and culturally safe in building relationships and creating connections through collaborative stakeholder engagement and building capacity with our Global Health partners. 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

• Project Management and Reporting
  • Design and relay research and project results to a wider audience through dissemination products (presentations, abstracts, posters, key messaging, infographics) for diverse audiences (academic and non-academic)
  • Following project results-based management requirements
  • Provide annual/semi-annual reporting components using results-based management
  • Ensure performance reporting complies with funder requirements
  • Participate in long range planning of project activities & handle multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Travel alone or with others to Uganda for project activities
  • Assist in acquiring funds or leveraging resources
  • Foster transformative learning and engagement in global health, reflecting principles of balanced partnership, anti-racist and anti-colonial approaches
  • Manage the project teams including the supervision of staff and students (undergraduate to post-doctoral), some who may be traveling/living overseas for short/medium periods
  • Ensure objectives and project milestones are achieved within the established timeline, budget, and scope.  Responsible for early detection of issues that could impede advancing along the critical path for projects
• Monitoring and Evaluation
  • Consolidate project monitoring and tracking systems with the team in Uganda, assuring compliance with the Performance Measurement Framework
  • Ensure comprehensive performance measurement reporting is in place, and offer quality oversight
  • Stay abreast of global health metrics developments and advise on trends and opportunities
  • Lead planning of evaluation activities, including endline data collection plans, contracting evaluators and specialized researchers, and ensuring timely completion
  • Recruit, train, mentor, and in-scope supervise student assistants for the project
  • Support implementation research and process evaluation activities throughout the project
  • Collect data and assemble progress reports to provide regular updates to Project Directors and Director, Global Health Projects, and to comply with funding agency reporting requirements
  • Develop and foster process evaluation using implementation science methods and organize periodic review of findings
  • Apply research and M&E data for project implementation and provide recommendations to project leads on adaptations
• Collaboration & Engagement
  • Participate in provincial, national, and international committees for the project, specifically Canadian global partnership for women’s and children’s health
  • Develop and maintain a close working relationship with the Canadian Association for Global Health
  • Support expansion of our global health research networks and identify potential partnerships
  • Collaborate with and coordinate technical team members

Qualifications / Requirements:

• Masters degree or equivalent in experience degree in project management, international development or global health
• Minimum of 5 years related experience in in international development (less-resourced country setting) project management including time working overseas, ideally in East Africa, and preferably in an academic setting.  Additional years of experience is considered an asset
• Previous project manager experience with Global Affairs Canada (GAC) projects and knowledge of GAC guidelines, rules, reporting and evaluation expectations
• Mastery of critical project management skills and results-based management, including proposal development; start-up and implementation plans; work planning and progress assessment; personnel and budget management; contractual compliance; client relations; and RBM outcomes evaluation and reporting, including start-up and close down
• Knowledge in U of C and other post-secondary institutional programs, particularly regarding Global Health programs and resources
• A resourceful self-starter who possesses sound judgment, versatility and creativity, and basic quantitative and qualitative analytical skills
• Strong leadership, problem-solving, and planning and organization skills
• An effective relationship builder, with good listening skills and a clear and articulate communication style in cross cultural settings, especially East Africa
• Relevant financial experience, including oversight of project budgets
• Experience fostering a results-oriented culture, in Canada and with international partners
• A background in outreach approaches, dialogue events, feedback to stakeholders, and policy engagement with senior public service and political leadership
• Prior experience working in cross-cultural/ international settings including work in capacity-building (i.e., senior trainer/mentor)
• Strong team work as well as time management skills are required, and the ability to work by distance and independently, and to supervise and mentor staff in Canada and internationally
• Experience with the University, Cumming School of Medicine policies and procedures is considered an asset
