Compensation: CAD $95,500.00 + temporary benefits premium per annum 

Hours: 37.5 hours per week

Status: Full-time Temporary Contract – 24 months

Creating Hope in Conflict: A Humanitarian Grand Challenge (HGC) is a partnership of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO), the Government of the Netherland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (NMFA), Global Affairs Canada (GAC) and Grand Challenges Canada. Together, we seek life-saving or life-improving innovations to help the most vulnerable and hardest-to-reach people impacted by humanitarian crises caused by conflict across the following focus areas:

  • Safe water and sanitation: Innovations that improve the supply and quality of water, sanitation and waste management in conflict settings.
  • Alternative Energy: Innovations that create affordable, clean and reliable sources of electricity, including supporting local energy equipment vendors and better mapping energy demand and usage.
  • Life-saving information: Innovations that improve access to life-saving information, which may include addressing ICT infrastructure challenges, increasing digital literacy or improving two-way communication between humanitarian actors and the affected communities.
  • Health supplies and services: A wide range of innovations including, but not limited to, improving local manufacturing of health and nutrition supplies, improving medical product logistics or improving emergency outbreak response.

The INVESTMENT & PIPELINE DEVELOPMENT MANAGER, HUMANITARIAN INNOVATION develops, shapes and manages a dynamic portfolio of humanitarian innovations.  Deploying relevant thematic expertise, business acumen, and investment knowledge, this role has the following responsibilities:   

Source and Fund innovative deals aligned with portfolio strategies:

  • Source and secure sufficient and quality pipeline of humanitarian innovations from external and internal sources in line with GCC and HGC portfolio priorities
  • Review the pipeline of innovations, assess against HGC selection criteria and develop a shortlist of innovations for funding
  • Evaluate new grant opportunities, including facilitating scientific peer review and conducting operational, financial and programmatic due diligence and risk analysis
  • Prepare investment memorandums and present potential investments to GCC’s Investment Committee
  • Collaborate on negotiations and their translation into grant agreements 

Represent GCC and the portfolio with external audiences to achieve the objectives above:

  • Establish and/or manage partnerships with a range of stakeholders – such as foundations, development organizations, UN agencies, government officials, researchers, impact investors, and social entrepreneurs – primarily to establish stronger pipeline partnerships and source quality pipeline deals
  • Develop and test new initiatives to increase pipeline opportunities
  • Engage with external audience to promote HGC innovations and build pathways for adoption and scale. 

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

  • Demonstrated commitment to and knowledge of humanitarian sector
  • Demonstrated engagement with key stakeholders and networks in humanitarian sector
  • Excellent analytic, strategic thinking and project management skills
  • Self-directed with an entrepreneurial approach to source, fund, and support innovators
  • Highly developed verbal, written and presentation communications skills
  • Ability to take initiative and effectively manage competing priorities and deadlines
  • Commitment to GCC’s strategy of shifting power to those closest to conflicts
  • Working knowledge of French is a significant asset
  • Previous experience in impact investing a significant asset 

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION:

  • A minimum of 8-10 years of work experience, ideally with at least 3-5 years relevant experience in impact investing preferably including work with early-stage investments and/or social enterprises in low and middle income countries
  • Experience working and/or living in conflict and humanitarian contexts a significant asset
  • Advanced degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. impact investing, humanitarian, international development) – or commensurate work experience 

20-30%  international travel may be required.
