Manager, Business Development
(Permanent; Full-time; based in Toronto)

Reporting to the Director, International Policy and Programs, the Manager, Business Development is responsible for leading work to ensure that UNICEF Canada has the knowledge and information on UNICEF programs and priorities needed to secure and maintain additional funding and enhanced profile with the institutional donors. The responsibility broadly includes leading efforts to secure UNICEF Canada’s international programs business development pipeline, leading a small team to liaise with UNICEF country offices and headquarters to ensure that UNICEF Canada has the expertise, proposals, reports and programmatic knowledge necessary to identify and secure funding opportunities, and strengthen UNICEF Canada’s positioning as a partner of choice with institutional donors.

The responsibilities of the position will include:

Pipeline Development and Management (50%)

  • Lead development of pipeline with institutional donors for international programs, identification and creation of funding opportunities in priority thematic areas and contexts, in line with Country Office plans and global priorities.
  • Manage high-priority opportunities at different stages of development, liaising with institutional partners, Country Offices, within UNICEF Canada, and where relevant, UNICEF’s global Programs Department and/or Regional Offices.
  • Cultivate relationships with institutional donors and officials with a view to informing new business development strategies and opportunities.
  • Support Director’s work with relationship building with senior officials to support organizational positioning and identify funding initiatives.
  • Ability to represent the organization with the government and at events as requested by the Director.

Partnership Development (25%)

  • Identify new potential programmatic partnerships, develop relationships and effectively communicate with potential consortium partners, identifying strategic opportunities for partnership with Canadian and international civil society, academia, and relevant institutions. Where required, lead discussions with prospective partners to ensure synergy and complimentary of programmatic and operational approaches.  
  • Support International Programs colleagues within UNICEF Canada to build and maintain relationships with strategic country offices and headquarters teams to identify funding opportunities and gather programmatic materials needed for positioning and profiling with institutional donors and other partners/stakeholders.
  • Support International Programs colleagues to collaborate closely with the fundraising team to develop and present case for support to high level donors, taking the lead where required on complex partnerships and/or proposals.

Organizational Support and Capacity Development (25%) 

  • Provide training on business development in international development to internal UNICEF Canada staff and partners in support of organizational objectives as required, including capacity building on institutional donor landscape. 
  • Maintain an excellent knowledge of UNICEF’s overall policies and programs.
  • Maintain knowledge and awareness of national and international developments related to international development and humanitarian action.
  • Maintain effective UNICEF Canada cross-functional relationships to achieve both departmental objectives and to optimize synergies.
  • Maintain accurate financial records to ensure project/program accountability.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A university degree, college diploma or equivalent years’ work experience in International Development, Political Science, or a related field.
  • Five (5) plus years of relevant work experience in business development.
  • A track record in securing large and/or complex tenders or grants for Global Affairs Canada; experience in  securing funding from other institutional donors considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience in partnership formation and in negotiating consortium arrangements for joint bids to institutional donors.
  • Significant experience in  leading proposal design and development including writing compelling narratives, as well as co-ordinating and ensuring quality reviews of concept notes and proposals.
  • Experience in capacity building and/or mentoring.
  • Demonstrated sound judgment and political acuity in order to build and nurture strong relationships with diverse stakeholders, manage contentious issues and engage across multiple sectors.
  • Strong relationship building and relationship management abilities, including ability to work with diverse stakeholders – internal and external.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, with superb attention to detail and quality while meeting deadlines and multitasking in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Excellent knowledge of the Canadian international aid environment and institutional funding for international assistance, and strong understanding of the substantive issues affecting children, including intersecting forms of discrimination, multi-dimensional poverty, and fragility, displacement and conflict.
  • A good understanding of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and other relevant human rights treaties and standards, as well as the Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Excellent communications skills for diverse stakeholders, including written and oral communications.
  • The ability to distill information or concepts to be donor friendly and appropriate.
  • Strong staff management skills.
  • Strong orientation to critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and initiative. 
  • Strong basic financial management skills.
  • PC proficiency (MS Office).
  • Enthusiasm to advocate for UNICEF’s mission
  • Bilingualism in French (highly desirable)..

Salary range $64,000 to $80,000 per year.
