Position Summary

Operation Eyesight Universal (OEU) is an international development organization working to prevent blindness and restore sight. We partner with local hospitals and governments and receive support from generous donors in Canada and around the world. Founded in Calgary in 1963, we now operate across four continents, with programs in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi and Zambia. Our team is spread across Calgary, Nairobi, Accra, Lusaka, Hyderabad and London (UK).

The IT Manager will ensure that OEU’s IT infrastructure, cybersecurity and data protection policies effectively support its growing global team. This role involves managing vendors, ensuring compliance and supporting cross-functional collaboration to drive efficiency and innovation.

As the organization’s Privacy Officer and Data Protection Officer, the IT Manager will oversee cybersecurity, data governance and compliance, including GDPR and data-sharing agreements. The role also involves guiding software selection and implementation, without requiring deep expertise in every application.

The position is part of the Finance & Administration team and works closely with teams across all OEU locations.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. IT Infrastructure & Vendor Management

  • Ensure a scalable IT infrastructure that supports OEU’s global operations.
  • Manage external IT vendors, including hardware and software providers.
  • Oversee IT service contracts, renewals, licensing and compliance updates.
  • Work with vendors and teams to align hardware and software requirements.

2. Cybersecurity & Data Protection

  • Serve as Privacy Officer and Data Protection Officer, overseeing GDPR and data compliance.
  • Develop and implement cybersecurity policies to prevent data breaches and mitigate risks.
  • Conduct Data Protection Impact Assessments for new vendors and software.
  • Lead training initiatives to build awareness of data security best practices.

3. Compliance & IT Policy Development

  • Ensure IT compliance across all departments, integrating it into vendor approvals.
  • Work with legal consultants to develop and implement IT-related policies.
  • Provide on-site training and education to staff, building capacity in IT systems and tools.

4. Budget & Resource Management

  • Manage the IT budget, monitoring expenses and optimizing technology investments.
  • Oversee license renewals and ensure cost-effective procurement of IT resources.

5. Collaboration & Digital Innovation

  • Work with cross-functional teams to evaluate and implement IT solutions aligned with strategic goals.
  • Stay informed on emerging technologies, recommending innovations to enhance efficiency.
  • Support digital transformation initiatives within OEU’s programs.

6. SharePoint Governance

  • Oversee SharePoint management, including permissions, functionality and licenses.
  • Ensure effective organization and accessibility of documents and data.

7. AI Governance

  • Maintain and update AI governance policies in alignment with organisational goals.
  • Ensure seamless integration of AI policies into OEU’s operations.
  • Monitor AI usage to align with ethical standards and regulatory requirements.

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science or a related field.
  • 5+ years of IT management experience, preferably in a non-profit or international setting.
  • Strong knowledge of cybersecurity, data protection (including GDPR) and IT compliance.
  • Experience managing IT vendors, budgets and contracts.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based systems and Microsoft 365 including SharePoint.
