Social/Global Health Impact Fellowship & Training (SHIFT)

We are pleased to announce the launch of the new Social/Global Health Impact Fellowship & Training (SHIFT) combining research, education and clinical experiences with the goal to train the next generation of leaders in global health and social medicine at BC Children’s Hospital and Women’s Hospital + Health Centre (C&W). This two-year training program will support fellows in developing the leadership and scholarly skills to improve health and global health equity for women, children, and their families in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC’s). 

A fellow will design, implement and evaluate a research study with the support of a team of mentors from C&W and UBC.  The research study will be done through a collaboration with one of the Institute for Global Health’s established partnerships in an LMIC. The objective of the research project will be to meet the partner community’s needs as articulated by the community, in the fellow’s area of interest and, in alignment with the strategic priorities of the Institute for Global Health at C&W.  The fellow will be expected to present to present their research findings and if timing allows to publish the findings. 

During this fellowship, there may also be a concurrent opportunity to complete a formal training program, such as a graduate level (Masters or PhD) degree program within the Women+ and Children’s Health Sciences (WACH) or a Master’s in Public Health at UBC or at another institution.  

About the fellowship: 

  • It will require a 2-year time commitment
  • The start date will be in 2024 or 2025 with a flexible start date
  • Fellows will spend a dedicated amount of time during the fellowship in an LMIC
  • Fellows must be a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident 
  • They must be PGY4+ residents
  • Fellows must have or be eligible for the FRCPC examination, or equivalent training/qualifications for a subspecialty trainee 
  • Clinical Fellows must be currently enrolled in Canadian University affiliated program
  • Funding will be provided at the PARBC R5 or R6 level
