Description

The Building Community Resilience to Climate Change (BCR) project is located in Kédougou, a region in Senegal that has high vulnerability to food insecurity and high poverty rate relative to the rest of the country. The overall goal of BCR is to improve resilience of vulnerable rural communities to climate change, especially for poor women in the targeted.

This will be achieved through 3 pathways:

• gender-sensitive climate smart agriculture with the production and processing of indigenous drought-resistant crop (‘’Fonio’’) that is suited to the local climate, requires low level of agricultural input, and is tolerant to poor soils;

• increase women’s role in decision-making for sustainable livelihoods through building the capacity of women’s cooperatives to produce and market biomass briquettes using post-harvest waste like straw. Biomass briquettes represent an alternative energy source to the traditional method of using firewood or charcoal for fuel;

• enhance forest carbon sinks by supporting agroforestry, including the promotion of indigenous species, along with training local authorities and community members on forest conservation and protection, including bushfires prevention and management.

Outputs and activities include:

o  Providing training to farmers from 21 villages on improved planting techniques

o  Providing farmers with fonio (Indigenous, drought-resistant grain) seeds and agricultural inputs;

o  Formalizing and training women-led cooperatives on the creation and marketing of biomass briquettes as alternative fuel and the use of fonio husking machines;

o  Training community members and community-based forest monitors on sustainable forest management practices and bushfire prevention and management;

o  Seeding indigenous plants through community-managed nurseries, and promoting agroforestry through planting indigenous tree species in suitable community and forest areas to enhance forest carbon sinks;

o Conduct gender equality workshops with community members and men champions in 21 villages.
