The sixty-third session of the Commission on the Status of Women is taking place at United Nations Headquarters in New York from 11 to 22 March 2019.
Representatives of Member States, UN entities, and ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from all regions of the world are expected to attend the session.
CanWaCH’s Acting Executive Director, Julia Anderson, is live in NYC for the opening days of CSW. As Canada prepares to welcome the world to Women Deliver in Vancouver this June and as the host of the Women Deliver 2019 Mobilization Canada, CanWaCH looks forward to connecting with mobilizers and our global partners at CSW on collectively mobilizing for gender equality. CSW 63 is on the road to Women Deliver – Join the Mobilization now!
Our team started the day bright and early at UNICEF with Minister Monsef, CanWaCH members and Women Deliver Mobilizers: RESULTS Canada, Plan International Canada, World Vision Canada and Nutrition International for the No Girl Left Behind event. The panel began with an intergenerational dialogue between Minister Monsef and Aloka, the Plan International Canada youth representative.

As a part of the Women Deliver 2019 Mobilization Canada, we are mobilizing to see gender-responsive health systems and services come out of the Women Deliver 2019 Conference. Health systems in Canada and around the world need to be gender-responsive and uphold the essential sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and girls in to ensure that they can survive, thrive and realize their right to health with dignity and respect.
Our team began their second day at CSW 63 by attending an event on strategic communications hosted by Climate Nexus and the Center for Reproductive Rights. This event highlighted the power of storytelling and the importance of using these communications tools in our efforts to change the world.
“Science, facts, truth and evidence always win, just depends how long it takes” – Climate Nexus experts on the importance of building a narrative when reporting our findings.
Here at CanWaCH, we could not agree more. That’s why, over the next two years, the Canadian Collaborative for Global Health will bring together Canadian and global partners to generate solutions to urgent data challenges in global health and gender equality. We are dedicated to sharing this collaborative work through innovative storytelling tools like the ones discussed at this event.
Next, our team had the pleasure of attending a powerful panel by the Native Women’s Association of Canada on violence against Indigenous women and girls within our country. It was an honour to listen to their stories.
As a part of the Women Deliver 2019 Mobilization Canada, we recognize the importance of addressing the issue of violence against Indigenous women and girls in Canada. One of the legacies that we would like to see come out of the Women Deliver 2019 Conference is addressing the root causes of gender-based violence through:

Finally, our team finished the day by attending the CSW 63 reception at the Canadian Mission to the UN. We were delighted to be among fellow mobilizers and see such a strong representation of Canadian youth in attendance!
Women Deliver hosted the CSW 63 kickoff party. Katja Iversen, CEO of Women Deliver, opened the event by introducing young leaders from around the world.
The event featured the Honourable Maryam Monsef, Canada’s Minister of International Development and Minister for Women and Gender Equality. Minister Monsef celebrated Canada’s role in hosting Women Deliver 2019 and stressed the importance of mobilizing for gender equality in the lead up to the conference in June.
